Off-Duty Officer Strikes Three Rome Police Agents, One in Critical Condition After Major Accident

On the evening of November 6th, a serious accident in Rome resulted in severe injuries to three local police officers from the Roma Capitale force as they were investigating a prior traffic incident along Via Tiburtina, near the Grande Raccordo Anulare.

At around 9 p.m., the officers, who were working on documenting the details of a previous accident, were struck by a speeding vehicle driven by an off-duty Carabinieri officer. Despite safety precautions set up on the scene, the driver collided with the police car and the officers themselves, pinning them against barriers. Tragically, the driver was later found to be under the influence of alcohol, a situation that may lead to serious charges, including injury-related traffic offenses and driving under the influence.

The youngest of the injured officers, a 25-year-old agent who had just joined the IV Tiburtino unit a few weeks prior, sustained severe injuries. He underwent a complex surgical procedure at San Camillo Hospital, which, unfortunately, involved the amputation of one of his legs. The two female officers, also hit by the vehicle, were admitted to the hospital in critical condition but are expected to survive.

Rome’s Mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, and the head of the local police force, Mario De Sclavis, visited San Camillo Hospital to offer their support to the injured officers and their families. In addition, a public call for blood donations was issued to aid in the ongoing treatment of the injured officers.

The incident has highlighted the dangers faced by officers in the line of duty, especially when dealing with traffic incidents on busy roads. The Carabinieri officer involved has been detained and is currently undergoing further toxicological tests. He now faces possible severe legal consequences due to the gravity of the incident and the injuries sustained by the officers.
