In Padua, a 22-year-old father was arrested by police on charges of aggravated abuse and serious injuries inflicted upon his five-month-old son. The baby, who was already hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit for respiratory issues, was reportedly mistreated by his father. According to authorities, the suspected motive behind these cruel acts was financial gain through state benefits.

Baby Subjected to Abuse in Padua Hospital

The young man, of Sinti ethnicity and with a criminal record, was apprehended following the capture of disturbing footage from surveillance cameras in the pediatric intensive care unit. The footage allegedly shows the father inserting his fingers into the baby’s mouth and pressing down on the infant’s chest. This abusive behavior reportedly occurred repeatedly, with the father only stopping when he sensed someone approaching.

Investigators believe that the father aimed to inflict lasting damage on his son to potentially qualify for state assistance based on the child’s severe health condition. The intent appears to have been calculated to ensure continued financial support.

Medical Observations and Arrest

Doctors in charge of the baby’s care became alarmed as they noted injuries to the infant’s throat and sternum. Despite treatments, the baby’s condition would inexplicably deteriorate each time he began to show signs of recovery. Suspicions led medical staff to report the case, prompting police to review the surveillance footage, which ultimately revealed the father’s abusive actions.

Upon witnessing these scenes, law enforcement took immediate action, arresting the father on the spot. During a preliminary hearing, the 22-year-old opted not to answer questions, invoking his right to silence. However, the judge confirmed the arrest and issued a pre-trial detention order, charging the father with domestic abuse and serious bodily harm.

Baby to be Placed in Protected Custody

Prosecutor Giorgio Falcone has called for a medical examination to further document the injuries sustained by the infant. It has also been decided that, upon the baby’s discharge from the hospital, he will be placed in a secure facility along with his mother and an older sibling to ensure his safety and well-being.
